Tents & Tarps

When you think outdoor adventure, you think camping. And when you think of camping, you think of tents. A tent stands for freedom and adventure. Whether you are going on a lightweight trek with your backpack or staying together at a campsite. Urban Survival has a wide range of lightweight tents in its collection .

A dome or tunnel tent

We have many different tents. The most common types you can choose between are a dome tent or a tunnel tent. A tunnel tent, as the name suggests, has a tunnel shape. Because of this, these tents are often spacious but cannot withstand all types of weather. For example, if you are going to an area with a lot of wind, it is better to go for a dome model. The tents at Urban Survival are relatively easy to set up and with the sleek design offer a tent with little packing volume and weight. So they are ideal for all adventure trekkers.

Urban Survival has a wide range of tents from Tatonka, MSR and Vango brands.

Complete your equipment

Besides a good tent, there is much more you need on your camping trip. Think of a sleeping mat, sleeping bag, camping chair but also things like cooking utensils and lighting. To make your camping vacation as successful as possible, it is important to be well prepared to hit the road. Therefore, don't forget extra accessories for your tent such as; a tent groundsheet, tent poles, tent pegs or guy ropes should the weather turn.

Tarp

The Tarpaulin, or tarp, Basha or Hoochie, is a large tarp designed to provide shelter from rain, wind or sun. A tarp is made of strong, flexible and waterproof material, often including polyester, nylon, cotton, polycotton or canvas.

In some places, such as Australia, a tarp is often called a "Hootch." Tarps often have grommets or reinforced attachment points at the edges and corners. This so that there is the possibility of attaching rope to these points so that the tarp can be secured or hung.

Urban Survival has a wide range of tarps from the brands Tatonka, Helikon-Tex,Carinthia and Ticket-To-The-Moon.

The tarp as a tent

Backpackers, bushcrafters and survivalists often use tarps as a substitute for a tent. Tarp tents are often made of the material polyester or nylon, with PU or Silicone coating. This material has a very light weight and is strong and waterproof. Normally, a tarp is set up using poles, tent pegs and guy ropes. Tarps are often used by "Ultralight Backpackers," the reason being that tarps are much lighter in weight than other backpacking shelters.

The simplest form of a tarp tent is without a groundsheet, with open ends. This form of a tarp tent is normally cheaper and lighter in weight compared to a tent. Also, this way the tarp is much easier and faster to set up. One disadvantage to this model is that because it is open, the tarp offers less protection from wind, rain, snow or cold. Also, this model does not offer protection from insects.

Military application

Tarps are used by military personnel as shelter during field operations. Military tarps are lightweight, compact to transport, quick and easy to set up and camouflaged. This camouflage is simply the color and pattern of the tarp, these are selected based on the area in which the tarp will be used.

The low profile of the tarp allows it to give a small silhouette. This makes the tarp, and its occupants, less visible. Normally tarps are set up in forests. The trees make the military even harder to see, also the trees act as attachment points for ropes to hang the tarp. Tarps are ideal for forming observation posts (OPs) in that they are virtually invisible when proper camouflage is used.
